Automated 5S audits with cameras: order, cleanliness and safety monitored continuously by AIExisting security cameras automate 5S audits: disorganized materials, blocked passages, floor obstacles, cleanliness and forklift safety are detected 24/7 by AI.

5S is a lean-manufacturing methodology developed in Japan to improve order, cleanliness, safety and efficiency, built on five steps whose Japanese names start with 'S' (Seiri-sort, Seiton-set in order, Seiso-shine, Seiketsu-standardize, Shitsuke-sustain). In most plants 5S audits are done weekly or monthly, by hand and with a checklist, so order that slips between audits goes unseen. Hype Vision connected existing cameras in a warehouse and production area over RTSP and built a system that audits 5S rules continuously and automatically — all fully on-premise.

Why audit 5S with cameras?

A classic 5S audit is periodic: an auditor walks the floor, fills in a checklist and produces a report. But a pallet left in the aisle a few hours later, material dropped on the floor or a blocked passage stays unseen until the next audit.

AI running on existing cameras audits 5S rules continuously: it evaluates each zone against its defined rule, flags violations instantly and keeps a timestamped log. 5S stops being a single moment of inspection and becomes a continuously measured state.

Seiri & Seiton — sort and set in order

Storage and material areas are marked as defined zones in the camera view. The model judges whether material is in the right zone and tidy: an organized store is 'OK', while a pallet spilling outside its zone or material blocking a passage is flagged as a violation.

Stacks blocking pedestrian and forklift aisles, pallets left in the wrong place and disorganized storage become visible instantly.

  • Organized vs disorganized storage detection
  • Alert for material outside its defined area
  • Detection of material blocking a passage/aisle
  • Whether material is in the correct zone

Seiso — shine (cleanliness)

Machine and equipment zones are monitored against a 'clean and in place' rule. Waste containers and waste areas are defined separately; a full container, overflowing waste or a dirty zone is flagged, so cleanliness is logged continuously too.

  • Machine/equipment clean-and-in-place check
  • Waste container and waste-area status
  • Dirty/cluttered zone detection

Safety — clear aisles, obstacle-free floor, forklifts

Aisles and passages are monitored against a 'clear' rule. An obstacle on the floor, a blocked passage (accident risk) or a pallet left outside its zone turns into an instant alert. Forklift movement is monitored from the same image, so the safety dimension of 5S is audited continuously.

  • Aisle/passage clear check
  • Floor obstacle detection (trip/collision risk)
  • Blocked passage — accident-risk alert
  • Forklift movement monitoring

Seiketsu & Shitsuke — standardize and sustain

Each zone's status is logged with a timestamp, producing a continuous 5S score and trend. The audit no longer depends on a person or an audit day; standard rules are applied the same way on every shift and improvement becomes measurable.

Violations can be sent to the responsible team by dashboard, WhatsApp or email, so corrective action is taken without waiting for the next audit.

  • Continuous, zone-based 5S score and trend
  • Timestamped violation log and report
  • Standard rules applied the same on every shift
  • Violation alerts (dashboard/WhatsApp/email)

On-premise architecture and privacy

All analysis runs on a server inside the plant; video never leaves the site. 5S auditing is object- and zone-based and needs no personal identification; when staff appear, tracking is anonymous and faces can be blurred.

Outcome

5S auditing moved from periodic and manual to continuous, automatic and measurable. Order, cleanliness and safety violations are tracked on one screen with timestamped evidence, and the 5S report is produced without manual effort.

  • 5S audited 24/7 automatically
  • Order, cleanliness and safety on one platform
  • Continuous score with timestamped evidence
  • Audit report generated automatically

Frequently asked questions

Do I need new cameras for 5S auditing?

In most cases no. Existing RTSP/ONVIF cameras covering the warehouse and production area are enough; order, cleanliness and safety are assessed from the same feed.

Which 5S steps can cameras audit?

Anything visible: Seiri/Seiton (order, defined areas, blocked passages), Seiso (cleanliness, waste, machine in place) and safety. Seiketsu/Shitsuke are supported through a continuous score and log that help standardize and sustain.

Will the system raise false alarms?

Each zone is defined with site-specific rules and calibrated during the pilot; the goal is not to replace the auditor but to remove the blind spot between audits. Critical violations are prioritized.

Does video leave the plant?

No. The deployment is on-premise; analysis runs on a server inside the plant and only event and score data reach the dashboard.
