Stopping shopping carts from leaving the car park: AI cart loss prevention for supermarketsIn a supermarket car park, shopping carts are tracked with existing cameras: when a cart nears the exit/restricted area AI raises an instant alert, preventing cart loss.2025-01-02
In supermarket and mall car parks, shopping carts being pushed outside and not returned (cart loss) is both a cost and an order problem; every lost cart has to be replaced, and carts scattered around create traffic and safety risks. Watching dozens of cameras at once is impossible. Hype Vision connected the existing car-park cameras to AI: the system detects shopping carts, tracks them across cameras and raises an instant alert the moment a cart approaches or crosses the exit (restricted area) — all fully on-premise.

The problem: cart loss and a cluttered car park
When shopping carts are taken out of the car park they often never come back. Every lost cart is a direct cost; carts scattered across the lot and nearby roads create visual clutter and a risk for vehicles and pedestrians.
Security cannot watch dozens of car-park cameras at once and spot a cart heading for the exit; the loss is only noticed after the cart is gone.
The solution: cart detection + restricted area + instant alert
The system detects shopping carts in the image and tracks their positions. The exit gate and car-park boundary are defined as a 'restricted area'; when a cart approaches or tries to cross it, a 'cart exit attempt' alert is raised and logged with an evidence frame.
The alert can be sent to the dashboard, a PA system, the security team and, if wanted, an automatic barrier/gate — so staff act before the cart leaves the lot.

- Instant shopping-cart detection
- Exit/restricted-area definition and violation alert
- 'Cart exit attempt' alert with evidence frame
- Dashboard · PA · security · barrier integration
Works with existing security cameras
No special hardware is needed; the existing CCTV/IP cameras in the car park are used. Cart detection runs on the same image and a standard camera is enough, so the store gains a cart-loss-prevention layer without changing its camera infrastructure.

- Works with existing IP/CCTV cameras
- No special sensor or tag (RFID) required
- Cart detection and tracking from a single feed
Cross-camera tracking
The cart is tracked across several cameras — main entrance, exit gate and side view. A cart leaving one camera is picked up by the next, so the whole car park is covered by one system and the cart's direction (in/out) is understood.
- Main entrance, exit gate and side-view cameras working together
- Cart tracked across cameras
- Whole car park covered by one system
On-premise architecture and privacy
All analysis runs on a server inside the facility; video does not leave the site. The system is object (cart) based and needs no personal identification; when people appear, tracking is anonymous and faces can be blurred.
Outcome
Carts are detected before they leave the car park and security is alerted within seconds. Cart loss drops and the car park stays orderly and safer — all with existing cameras.
- Cart exit stopped at the car-park boundary
- Instant, evidence-framed alert to security
- Uses existing cameras, no extra hardware
- Less cart loss and clutter
Frequently asked questions
Do carts need an RFID tag?
No. The system detects the shopping cart from the image with AI; no sensor, tag or wheel lock is needed on the cart. Existing cameras are enough.
Can a cart really be stopped at the exit?
The system raises an alert the moment a cart nears the exit boundary; this can be connected to a PA announcement, the security team and, if wanted, an automatic barrier/gate, so staff act before the cart leaves the lot.
Do I need new cameras?
In most cases no. Existing CCTV/IP cameras that see the car park and exit are used; field-of-view suitability is assessed in the free pre-assessment.
Does video leave the site?
No. The deployment is on-premise; analysis runs on a server inside the facility and only event data reaches the dashboard.
