Early fire and flame detection with cameras: spots a basketball-sized flame from 15-20 metersExisting cameras detect fire and flame early from the image; a basketball-sized flame is caught from 15-20 meters away and an instant WhatsApp/dashboard alert is raised.2025-01-02
In a fire, time is everything: catching the flame before it grows makes response far easier. Heat and smoke detectors usually wait for smoke or heat to physically reach the detector; in large, high-ceiling or ventilated spaces that can be late. Hype Vision built a system that detects flame early from the image using existing cameras. In a field test, a basketball-sized flame placed 15-20 meters away was detected and an alert was raised instantly via WhatsApp and the dashboard.

The problem: seeing a fire before it grows
Heat and smoke detectors sense a fire when heat or smoke physically reaches the detector. In high-ceiling, large or ventilated spaces that can be delayed; the system may not trigger even while a flame is visible.
A camera, on the other hand, can catch flame and smoke visually in its field of view, at the source and from a distance — as long as smart analysis recognizes it.
The solution: flame detection from the camera (field demo)
The existing camera feed is analyzed continuously; the model looks for flame and fire signatures. In a field test, a basketball-sized flame placed 15-20 meters away was detected and the event was reported instantly. This shows that even a small, early-stage flame can be caught from a distance.
- Flame and fire detection from the image
- Catching a small flame from 15-20 m away
- Early-stage detection, before it grows
- With existing cameras — no special sensor
Instant alert: WhatsApp and dashboard
The moment a flame is detected, an alert is raised and sent with an evidence frame to WhatsApp, the dashboard or the security team. So the right people know within seconds of the event and response starts early.
- Instant WhatsApp/dashboard alert on flame detection
- Evidence-framed, timestamped log
- Notification to security team/paging system
- Early warning for fast response
Existing cameras, range and coverage
Not a dedicated flame detector but the facility's existing cameras are used. Range and reliability depend on camera resolution, field of view, ambient light and flame size. High-fire-load areas (workshop, warehouse, recycling, energy) are covered first.
- Works with existing IP/CCTV cameras
- Range varies with camera and environment
- Prioritization of high-risk areas
- Wide-area coverage across multiple cameras
On-premise architecture and complementing detectors
Analysis runs on-premise; video does not leave the site. Camera-based detection does not replace existing heat/smoke detectors; it complements them with a visual, at-a-distance early-warning layer.
Outcome
Fire can be detected visually at the flame stage and from a distance, without waiting for smoke to reach a detector. Even a small flame from 15-20 meters is caught and reaches WhatsApp within seconds — all with existing cameras.
- Early detection at the flame stage
- Catching a small flame from 15-20 m
- Instant WhatsApp/dashboard alert
- Existing cameras, complements detectors

Frequently asked questions
Does it really see a small flame from 15-20 meters?
In a field test, a basketball-sized flame was detected from 15-20 meters and an alert was raised instantly. Range depends on camera resolution, field of view, ambient light and flame size, and is verified on each site during the pre-assessment.
Does it replace heat/smoke detectors?
No, it complements them. The camera catches flame visually and at a distance early; it works as an early-warning layer alongside existing fire-detection systems.
Do I need new cameras?
In most cases no. Existing cameras that see the area are used; field-of-view and range suitability are assessed in the free pre-assessment.
Where does the alert go?
On flame detection, an instant alert can be sent to the dashboard, WhatsApp, the security team and, if wanted, a PA/paging system. Analysis runs on-premise and video does not leave the site.
